Metro Police recover stolen bakkie in Merebank before owner knew it was stolen

The bakkie's owner was contacted and was unaware it had been stolen

A STOLEN bakkie was recovered and two men were arrested following a police chase through Lamontville and Merebank on Friday, 23 November.
At about 1.30pm members of the Metro Police dog unit, Inspector Morrison and Cst Muthen were patrolling along Hull Road in Lamontville when they noticed a suspicious-looking vehicle drive past.

They followed the vehicle while flashing blue lights and sounding their sirens in a bid to make the driver to pull over.
However, the bakkie driver continued driving towards Himalayas Road in Merebank.

The officers alerted the police and the vehicle was jammed in and forced to stop, with the help of Wentworth SAPS, Lamontville SAPS vispol and the Lamontville SAPS station commander who arrived at the scene. Two suspects were arrested by Metro Police.
The bakkie’s owner was contacted and was unaware it had been stolen from a Durban central area parking area a few hours earlier.

The bakkie owner subsequently opened a theft of motor vehicle case at Durban Central. The men will be charged for theft of motor vehicle or possession of suspected stolen property.
They were detained at Wentworth SAPS and were due to appear in court on Monday, 26 November. The Metro Police officers were commended for effecting the arrests and the recovery of the stolen bakkie, while the police members were commended for providing back-up,” said Wentworth SAPS spokesman, Capt Mbuso Gumede.
