Tickets are for entry to the Wednesday, 28 November performance only and cannot be exchanged for cash.Winners will be notified telephonically. Should the Sun not be able to reach the winners within a day, another winner will be chosen and notified. Tickets must be collected at the door.
In this new venture, NuMetro Cinemas and Carvin have teamed up to bring live comedy to the movie theatre.
“The plan is to introduce live comedy at movie theatres around the country in partnership with NuMetro,” explained Carvin. “The idea is to have regular comedy nights at NuMetro moving forward. This is something we spoke about earlier this year and we’re happy to finally be launching it.
Dubbed NuMetro Comedy Nights, the venture will see a host of one-man and one-woman shows, ensemble lineups, and themed stand-up comedy shows take place over the next year.
“There is a great demand for fresh, accessible stand-up comedy in South Africa. This initiative ticks all the boxes in terms of bringing fresh talent and comedy content to a highly accessible stage,” said Carvin.
“Eventually we’d like to roll out the comedy in NuMetro cinemas across SA. This is a good test to see how the market responds to hosting stand-up comedy in a movie theatre. We thought it was a great fit. Movie theatres have tiered, cinema-style seating, it’s an intimate space which is perfect for comedy, so we are really hoping the public jumps on this because it’s going to be something new and fresh for everyone to enjoy,” he said.
Offering a taste of the funny to come in 2019, the NuMetro Comedy Nights launch event will see Carvin perform an one-man show of new and recent ideas from his tours around the world.
Carvin is one of the biggest names in SA comedy. His recent accomplishments include winning Comics Choice Comedian of the Year (2018), which is considered the ‘Oscars’ of SA comedy. Previous winners include Trevor Noah and Loyiso Gola.
A well-travelled international act, Carvin has performed in the UK, Middle East, Australia, New Zealand and across Southern Africa, including Swaziland and Zimbabwe. This includes being invited to perform The Magners International Comedy Festival, which is Asia’s biggest comedy festival, and The Melbourne International Comedy Festival, the third largest comedy festival in the world. These tours took place in 2018.
NuMetro Comedy Nights will be staged on 27 November at Cornubia, Cinema 4 at 8pm; 28 November at Galleria, Cinema 3 at 8pm; and 29 November at The Pavilion, Cinema 3 at 8pm.
