KZN conmen fleece women in life savings-centred romance scam

There are criminals who target older, widowed or divorced women, and pretend to be attracted to them to have a relationship with them.

Police appeal to women in KwaZulu-Natal to be alert at all times and not fall victims to con men who target them for their hard-earned money.

“There are criminals who target older, widowed or divorced women, and pretend to be attracted to them to have a relationship with them,” said Colonel Thembeka Mbele of the SAPS KZN media centre.

“They then influence them to resign from their employment for better investment opportunities or convince them to consult a ‘traditional doctor’ who assists with multiplying cash using ‘black magic’.”

Police say many women have fallen victim to such modus operandi and it is not easy to investigate cases where there has been an agreement or exchange of cash in a romantic relationship. Women are warned to be vigilant at all times and not trust anyone with their life savings.
