The objective of this health and wellness activity was to celebrate women and create awareness on breast cancer

IN light of breast cancer awareness month, women police officers at Brighton Beach SAPS participated in a women’s network health and wellness initiative on Tuesday, 16 October.
A wall of inspiration was decorated within the police station, with motivational slogans and images about cancer awareness.

It was designed in support for fighters, admiring the survivors and honouring the taken. The wall will remain decorated with this theme for the duration of breast cancer awareness month.
Each guest received a pink ribbon to wear on their chest and a mini-shrine was erected with a single scented candle being lit, remembering those who have been taken, those who are suffering and those in remission. The candle remained lit for the duration of the day.

During parade, vanilla cupcakes bearing the signature pink ribbon were handed out. A health and wellness brochure on breast cancer awareness, which was researched and developed by Brighton Beach SAPS spokesman Captain Louise Le Roux, was distributed. The content explained breast cancer, myths, risk factors, symptoms and diagnosis. The manner in which to conduct a breast self-examination was also discussed, with visual aids to assist understanding. Contact details of support groups were also provided.
“I am hopeful that this health and wellness brochure will encourage my female colleagues to include a breast self-examination as part of their monthly health care routine, as early detection saves lives. The objective of this health and wellness activity was to celebrate women and create awareness on breast cancer, which was achieved,” said Brighton Beach SAPS spokesman, Capt Louise Le Roux.
