Wentworth dance troupe stages annual festival despite all odds

The festival creates a platform for performances and showcasing many talents of dance in a variety of genres

DESPITE the funding crisis and government cuts to funds for art organisations, the Wentworth Arts and Culture Organisation has partnered with the Playhouse Company and the National Arts Council to host the annual Durban Dance Movement Festival at the Playhouse Drama Theatre.

The Durban Dance Movement Festival will wow with amazing dance performances in two showcases on Friday and Saturday, 14 and 15 September.

The festival creates a platform for performances and showcasing many talents of dance in a variety of genres like hip hop, contemporary, ballet, African, Bollywood and many other local styles. This is a highlight on the social calendar of dance events and productions in Durban.

“What I enjoy the most about the Durban Dance Movement Festival is the diversity of artists and dancers who come together and share a communal space where we celebrate our artistic talents and appreciate our many cultures which make our city vibrant. This year the festival continues to offer a variety of performances for all audiences to thoroughly enjoy and I’m glad Durban gets to see that,” said artistic director Jarryd Watson.

Bringing diversity to the dynamic festival are featured dance troupes like KZN Dance Academy, KwaMashu School of Dance Theatre, City Celebration, Dance Academy Kloof and ShoDem to name a few. Chelsea Blair Dance Academy will perform some contemporary and jazz dances while Kumari Shiskha Dance Institute performs classical Indian and Bollywood dances to mark their debut performance at this year’s festival. The hosts Dance Movement will have a special, integrated performance with their wheelchair dancers on opening night.

Audiences can expect nothing but the best from this festival. Catch Friday’s opening night performance at 7pm by professional dance groups, with another two shows at 2pm and 7pm on Saturday by junior and senior level dance groups.
