Tafta elders put pen to paper in #TaftaTellMyStory competition

The competition, hosted annually by Tafta is open to all elders and community club members

DURBAN’S youth have been urged to explore their story-telling prowess while connecting with the elders in their lives

The elders of The Association for the Aged (Tafta) are gearing up to put pen to paper to enter the association’s #TaftaTellMyStory competition, which launched for the first time to primary school pupils in July.

The competition, hosted annually by Tafta and open to all elders and community club members, is aimed at reawakening the love of story-telling and reading in the elderly. This year, the competition was extended to include an entry category for primary school pupils, in a bid to bridge inter-generational gaps and promote conversations between young and old, according to Tafta CEO Femada Shamam.

“We’ve been thrilled at the response from schools with at least 10 schools confirming their participation in the competition,” said Shamam. She explained that Tafta hopes to encourage children at a young age to appreciate that elders are walking libraries with a wealth of information and experience to share. “Our elders have always embraced the competition and we’ve gained so much from the shared wisdoms generated through entries received each year so it was the most natural extension for us to invite the youth too, to explore their story-telling prowess while connecting with elders in their lives,” she added.

Participating schools have until the end of September to submit entries to Tafta and winners (in both the elders and school competition categories) will be announced at the end of a mall exhibition of the finalists’ work at Windermere Centre between 5 and 15 November.

While the younger entrants were asked to interview elders and share their lessons in life through the ‘celebrating the life of an elder person’ theme, the elders are being challenged to share their life lessons through the theme ‘a letter to my grandchild’. Winning entries are eligible to win electronic gadgets such as laptops and tablets sponsored by MicroDivision and Windermere Shopping Centre.
