Members regale in YWPWI’s 50 year history at birthday party

Its amazing president and her equally amazing committee organised a wonderful birthday party for all members and many past members to attend.

YELLOWWOOD Park Women’s Institute (YWPWI) celebrated its 50th birthday in great style at a local hostelry.

Its amazing president and her equally amazing committee organised a wonderful birthday party for all members and many past members to attend.

Everything was arranged down to the last detail. Name tags as members entered the hall, which was a good idea as often you knew the face but just could not think of the name, and then off to a special allocated table. Members were fortunate to have the very first president of 50 years ago, Pam Haslam, attend.

President Sharon Quail started off the party with the WI prayer and then with special thoughts of all members who had passed on and a special flower for each one. She proceeded to congratulate and thank all members who continually entered the competitions each month and always went the extra mile to assist.

The federation president and vice president were present. The birthday cake was cut and members gave full voice to singing happy birthday. A really delicious lunch was served, during which members tried to catch up with happenings over the past years from other members, some of whom had become grandmothers or even great-grandmothers during this period. Everyone agreed on how much they had learnt by being a member of the WI.

While all the chatter and discussions were going on, photos were displayed of many events which took place over the past years, with everyone again trying to recognise each other or remember the event. It really was a memorable occasion. Each member left with the thought ‘let’s do it again and not wait another 50 years’.

Thank you to the president and committee for organising such a happy, eventful and memorable occasion.

How many residents in the area realise how fortunate we are to have the amazing wildlife rehabilitation centre that is CROW in their midst? The Centre for Rehabilitation of Wildlife (CROW) was started in about 1980. YWP Women’s Institute had the opportunity to tour this animal centre with the assistance of tour guide Paul. The representatives were given an informative slideshow of all the work carried out on injured animals. It is sad to say that many animals are injured by humans, just by throwing out rubbish and not putting in the correct bin. It is wiser not to feed animals that come into your garden. After the slideshow, members had a walk around the centre. Most of the cages where the animals and birds are kept are covered, which is important so that the animals do not get humanised and they can be released into the wild again soon after treatment.

YWPWI was also shown where its donation to the centre had been utilised. It was a most interesting and informative morning, with many members present. The centre relies a lot on donations, so consider CROW when giving donations.

Thank you to CROW for their amazing work.
