Police put brakes on Bluff motorcycle thieves

The bail conditions will be revoked.

POLICE put the brakes on three motorbike thieves who were re-arrested and charged for possession of stolen property on Thursday, 23 August.

On 6 August the three men were arrested for possession of a motorbike for which they were not able to prove ownership of. The trio were charged for being in possession of stolen property. At their first court appearance, they were released on R1,000 bail each.

The thieving trio were spotted in the early hours of Thursday morning by Brighton Beach housebreaking task team, Warrant Officer Jacobus Lindeque and Sergeant Robert Jooste who were at an observation post on the corners of Beacon and Tara roads when a suspicious vehicle came into sight, driving with its lights dimmed.

The driver was on his phone when another man emerged from the shadows and got into the vehicle. They drove off along Tara Road with the bakkie lights off.

“W/O Strydom of the K9 Unit came driving towards them while on patrol. The vehicle responded by reversing rapidly, and turned up Beacon Road, but was boxed in by the K9 unit vehicle. W/O Lindeque and Sgt Jooste ran from their vehicle towards the stationary bakkie.

Two of the three men were those arrested by Sgt Robert Jooste on 6 August for being in possession of a motorcycle suspected to be stolen,” said Brighton Beach spokesman, Capt Louise Le Roux.

A complaint was radioed through about an attempted theft of motorcycle which occurred near the bushes where the two men were spotted exiting from. When the police made their way to the complainant’s home, the criminals’ car and the men were identified in CCTV footage, attempting to steal a motorcycle.

Two weeks before, the same home owner had a motorcycle stolen from his premises. The three men were re-arrested and charged for attempted theft of motor vehicle.

The bail conditions will be revoked.

SAPS Brighton Beach had experienced a spate of motorcycle thefts within the area over the last few months, and through further investigation, we are sure these perpetrators will be linked to other cases,”added Capt Le Roux.
