DURING a foot patrol campaign to combat crime, Brighton Beach SAPS and its partners identified some risky habits being perpetuated by residents and commuters, which make them vulnerable to crime.
While on patrol Brighton Beach SAPS’ division media monitoring and liaison services and ET Rapid Response Security noticed high-risk behaviour which is of concern. “We have seen individuals walking in the street while texting, talking on their phones, or listening to music with headphones or earpieces, making them vulnerable to common or aggravated robberies. Also women who carry their handbags with the zip facing backwards, and men with their wallets in their rear pants pockets, creating an opportunity for theft by snatching to take place,” said Brighton Beach SAPS Capt Louise Le Roux.

They also noticed a lack of security measures taken in private homes, including where gates were left open to premises and front doors and windows left open when houses were empty. “Several vehicles were also found parked on verges and at shopping mall complexes unlocked and with their windows wound down, with valuables in plain sight,” she added.

The multi-phased daily operations included the holding of 63 vehicle check point, 47 streets were patrolled on foot after being identified through crime pattern analysis and crime threat analysis within the Clairwood and Bluff residential and business sectors. High visibility, slow vehicle patrols accompanied by stop and search activities also contributed to decreasing property related crimes.
SAPS Brighton Beach management thanked ET Rapid Response Security for their support with the footbeat activities, static deployments and the distribution of educational brochures in partnership with Capt Le Roux, and for sponsoring the educational flyer.
Capt Le Roux was also acknowledged for initiating and project managing, while also being operational commander during the daily deployments.
