Plaudits for Bluff lensman’s iconic Durban fire drone photo

Du Bois received recognition from the jury board in the urban category, for his image entitled ‘Warehouse Fire’

THE iconic aerial photograph of the #Durbanfire which was taken by Bluff photographer in 2017, Byron Du Bois has been chosen as a runner-up in the 2018 Drone Awards photo contest which showcases the world’s best aerial photographs.

Du Bois received recognition from the jury board in the urban category, for his image entitled ‘Warehouse Fire’, from among 4,400 submissions worldwide.

The photo depicts an aerial perspective of the Durban warehouse fire which burnt for almost a week while 150 firefighters battled the blaze. Although it was an horrific event, Byron seized the opportunity to create art.

“When I look at a composition, it comes down to how the light hits the subject at a particular angle. From there, it becomes really magical. Having the drone that day enabled me to gather the epic shots of the blaze, despite the crazy south-westerly wind which was blowing,” he said.

As a runner-up, his work will be displayed in the ‘Sky’s the Limit’ exhibition in the prestigious halls of the Siennese Institute of Fine Art ‘Duccio di Buoninsegna’ which he has been invited to attend in October.

Byron is no novice in the world of photography. He has been behind the lens for 10 years, eight of which have been at professional level. “I enjoy the ability to see things in a different light to others and make moments magical with each shot.

Drone photography was really just an added bonus. Once we got one, it opened up so many avenues into capturing landscapes from above,” said Byron.

My future goal in photography is to be recognised by others for my ability to portray something differently. “I have the urge to really create something different, while using the broad skill set I have. Last month I was able to realise a dream to shoot for Wonderbra. A bit of hope and passion can drive you as a person to make anything happen. It just comes down to attitude,” he said.
