Parent’s green fingers beautify Yellowwood Park traffic circle

The school also hopes to tackle and beautify the Flamingo-Barbet traffic circle in the coming months.

THE passion of a parent is transforming the traffic circles outside Yellowwood Park Primary School into an attractive landmark.
Landscaper, Richman Khumalo was approached by school teacher Mrs Goodwin who asked him to help them beautify the school and surrounding area.

“He did not hesitate. He has taken time off work to start the garden and even came back after work one evening with his three children to work in the dark to plant new plants. He has also taught our general service assistants how to care for the garden. We asked parents for donations and sincerely thank those who helped us,” said Mrs Goodwin.

The school has adopted the Curlew-Oriole-Barbet traffic circle as part of a beautification drive. “I wanted to help the school and utilising my talent and skills was a perfect opportunity for me to give back. I also want to use this project to encourage other parents to get involved with the school and help make it a better place for their children and future generations,” said Khumalo.

Richman designed, organised and planted indigenous plants which do not require much watering to be laid out in the traffic circle. “I’m grateful for the help from the general service assistants who are educated and eager to help maintain the circles,” he added.
While the project has taken root, it still has a long way to go for completion and Khumalo pleads with the community to help finish the beautification he has started. Our materials are running out and I plead with parents and the wider community to help out with more indigenous plants and compost. I also ask those who are using the circle to respect the area, as this is not only for the school but for everyone,” said Khumalo.
