Bluff pageant winner decries society’s labels

The former Glenwood High School pupil already has a few wins under his belt.

BLUFF boy and now Mr SA Youth, Johnathan Visser dreams of one day being crowned Mr Universe and judging by his passion and determination, it is bound to happen.

The former Glenwood High School pupil started modelling through Mobile Model Management under the leadership of Shaun Stander eight months ago and he already has a few wins under his belt.

Visser hopes his love for modelling will act as a gateway into his dream of becoming an actor. He never expected to win as he only entered the competition to gain experience and in the hope of being scouted by a film agency. “I was shocked and elated (to win) and it gave me the push to enter and win as many competitions as I can.

The 18-year-old believes he has learned a lot in his short time in modelling. “I have learned a smile goes a long way and might just be the one thing that someone needs to see who needs uplifting. I have learned that beauty is not defined by how you look outwardly but that inner beauty is far more attractive,” he said.

“There are so many young people today that have no self worth because they believe they are not worthy – just because society has placed such a high price on what the perfect girl or boy should look like. Our youth are crippled through this and if we can teach them they are worthy, then we change our fathers, mothers, leaders, husbands and wives of tomorrow who in turn can then make our country whole,” added Johnathan.

Besides modelling, Jonathan’s passions include doing mehndi and gymnastics together with aerial silks. “I work with Bella Beauty to do stage make-up for productions and events. I have a huge passion to also do art for cancer patients and those suffering with alopecia with my mehndi art. It’s vital that patients feel they are loved and making them look and feel good plays a huge role,” he added.

Johnathan advises the youth to follow their dreams. “There is a perception in society that it’s not cool to be a model if you are a male. Do not try and fit in if you were meant to stand out. It takes the same amount of energy to dream small as what it takes to dream big – so dream big. Do not allow other people to take your dreams from you just because society has placed labels on male models. Once you understand that you answer to yourself and God, only then are you a winner. Define your own destiny without society’s labels,” he advised.
