Brighton Beach SAPS ruled out foul play

A 68-year-old pensioner died when his makeshift home in Cherry Road, Clairwood, caught alight after a primus paraffin stove was left on, on Friday, 22 June.
Brighton Beach SAPS spokesman, Capt Louise Le Roux warned residents against leaving candles, paraffin stoves or anything alight while you sleep. The 68-year-old man was allegedly in his makeshift home on Cherry Road, Clairwood when it caught alight due to his primus paraffin stove being left on.

Capt Le Roux believed this to be the third fire in the area. “We will be conducting a door-to door campaign at informal settlement and homes in Clairwood soon to educate and bring awareness around home and fire safety. What happened to this man was devastating for the community and future incidents must be prevented through education and awareness,” she said.

Brighton Beach SAPS ruled out foul play and an inquest docket was opened. They are now in search of the man’s next of kin to inform them of the pensioner’s death. Call Capt Le Roux on 031-451-8060 should you have details to share with the police about the man’s family.
