Fundraiser draws R10,000 for Bluff man’s kidney transplant hopes

In 2009, Shayne's mother gave him her own kidney to sustain her son’s life.

A HUGE benefit fundraiser was held to not only bring awareness and support to the issue of kidney failure but hopefully raise enough money to help Bluff man, Shayne Koekemoer (30) who desperately needs a kidney transplant.

Shayne is only number 621 on the donor transplant list.

Since the age of 17 years, Shayne has suffered with crippling end-stage kidney disease. In 2009, his mother gave him her own kidney to sustain her son’s life. For eight years, all went well for both mother and son but in February 2017, Shayne’s new kidney rejected due to a cytomegalovirus (CMV) virus infection.

“We held this event so we could help Shayne to be more mobile and comfortable and I thank all those who attended and who sponsored towards the day. Loads of lucky draws were given out as well as the weekend away from Yvette Houghton and a harbour cruise with Aquanautical Adventures and a Vaudrey hair straightener sponsored by Egoli Salon.

After paying for the expenses related to the fundraiser such as carnival and pony rides and braai packs, the family managed to amass R10,000 which will go towards Shayne’s medical costs and plasters. The family expressed their sincere gratitude to the community for coming together in support of raising awareness of kidney failure.
