SASSA card holders encouraged to change old cards
The Post Office (SAPO) said SASSA beneficiaries must use the weekend card swap initiatives in their areas and swap their cards now.
SASSA card holders who are still using the old white SASSA card, which will be fully phased-out by 30 September this year, can swap their old card for a new one today at several venues in the North West province.
Post Office and SASSA employees will be on duty on Saturday, 23 June to issue people the new official SASSA card which has been designed to protect beneficiaries from illegal deductions for things such as airtime, electricity and unwanted loans.
The new SASSA card is gold in colour and has an RSA Government logo on the right-hand side and SASSA is written on the left. The only deductions allowed on the new SASSA card are funeral policies on non-child grants, which cannot be more than 10 per cent of the grant.
Africa Mhlanzi, Post Office regional manager, said SASSA beneficiaries be careful of accepting cards with hefty services charges that are not regulated to prevent illegal deductions.

The Post Office (SAPO) said SASSA beneficiaries must use the weekend card swap initiatives in their areas and swap their cards now. The new SASSA card offers: Three cash withdrawal from any participating merchant (such as Shoprite, Boxer);
free swipes (purchase payments) at all merchants; one free ATM balance enquiry per month.
SAPO says that beneficiaries will not be charged R10 per month, or any such ‘service fee’, when using the new SASSA card, so a person gets their grant in full. “It is important for beneficiaries to know which card will cost, and how much, when making their choice. You can still change to the new SASSA card even if you accepted another card recently,” said Mhlanzi.
