Durban SPCA’s food stocks under serious threat

on the one hand, we have more mouths to feed while on the other, we have less food to go round.

DURBAN and Coast SPCA’s food stocks are running dry and staff and volunteers urge supporters to help them.
Usually, the stock room is brimming with huge bags of dog and cat food piled up to the ceiling, and their shelves are jammed with cans, boxes and sachets of pet food.
“Since the increase in VAT and the latest petrol price hike, people who used to drop off generous donations of dog and cat food at our SPCA, simply aren’t able to do so any more,” said general manager, Caroline Smith. “With up to 300 dogs in our kennels at any one time, the SPCA goes through more than 100kg of dry food and 18 large cans of food in just one day. What makes it worse is the increased number of pets being brought in to our SPCA by owners who can’t afford to keep them any longer, so on the one hand, we have more mouths to feed while on the other, we have less food to go round. It’s very, very worrying,” she added.

SPCA hopes every person in Durban with a heart for animals will rally around to help buy pet food for the dogs and cats in the SPCA’s kennels. A donation of just R230 buys 10kg of dry dog food or 9 large tins of dog food or three boxes of pouch meals for a dog or cat recovering in the animal hospital.
Donations are welcomed and any brand and type of pet food is suitable. “Why not get together with friends or business colleagues to collect pet food and drop it off at our premises in Springfield Park? Or take a selfie of your donation and challenge your friends on social media to get involved too,” encouraged Smith.
