Woodhaven Air Scout pledges to raise 100kg of dog food

I see my future career as a pilot or ranger so I can help animals in need.

ANIMAL lover and 58th Durban Air Scouts Cub, Ethan Backhouse urges the community to help him reach his goal of raising 100kg of dog and puppy food for Project Dog by the end of June.

Not only is he doing this to complete his personal challenge to receive the Leaping Wolf Badge, the highest accolade a Cub can achieve, but also to give back to a well deserving non-profit organisation which is run by a small and dedicated group of volunteers who are passionate about the rights of all animals.

“They have helped my family before with our dogs so I felt it right to make Project Dog the focus of my challenge,” said the Brighton Beach Primary grade 5 pupil.

Since 2014, Ethan has been in Scouts and has since moved to the Air Scouts, thanks to his passion and dream of becoming a pilot and a game ranger. “It was my love for animals and flying that got me into the Air Scouts as we do a lot of camping in the wilderness and learning about wildlife. I see my future career as a pilot or ranger so I can help animals in need.

Right now, it’s small steps and I ask the community to help me help the animals by collecting the dog food,” he said.

His favourite animal is the elephant only because he feels they are alike. “Like the elephant I’m am misunderstood because of my height. Some children see me as threatening but I’m really just a gentle giant,” he smiled.

Earning his badge will not only be a great achievement but it’s an opportunity to show the world what he can do to help those in need and he wishes to continue on helping animals whenever he can through charity and volunteering.
