MOTORISTS who have had to divert from Brighton Road can finally rejoice after the long-awaited repairs to the damaged road were completed on Friday, 4 May.
The road was badly damaged in last year’s storm which ravaged Durban South on 10 October, leaving many homeless, roads flooded and millions rands worth of damage to municipal infrastructure, including Brighton Road.
The road which links Bluff to Jacobs suffered a massive sinkhole measuring about 20-metres, reduced the roadway to a single lane and literally left the tarred surface with no underpinning, with the threat of further collapse imminent.

Bluff ward councillor, JP Prinsloo said the repairs of the road took about eight months to complete. This followed the completion of the Tara Road sinkhole which also required a deviation to Bluff motorists’ routes to and from work.
“I’m ecstatic that repairs to Brighton Road have been completed. I thank motorists and residents for their patience and community liaison officer Sibusiso Dlamini and the local labourers who made this major repair possible,” said Cllr JP Prinsloo.

Technician Njabulo Khumalo and Ivan Meth, safety officer from DC Earthmoving, the company contracted to effect the road repairs, are relieved that their project was finalised without a hitch. “There were three designs and one was finally passed and implemented. I can guarantee residents this road is now built to last and should withstand any storm that come its way,” said Khumalo.
The team is now focusing on the Stapleford Road repairs which was also badly damaged in last year’s storm.
