UPDATE: Labour dept halts work at #DurbanBuildingCollapse site

No further construction work at the site until the department finalises its investigation.

A PROHIBITION notice has been issued by the Department of Labour to halt work at the construction site in Chamberlain Road, Jacobs where three workers died on Wednesday, 28 Mar.

The notice effectively stops any further construction work at the site until the department finalises its investigation.

“The prohibition notice may be lifted or amended once the inspection team is satisfied the site is safe,” said labour department spokesman, Teboho Thejane.

The three victims were trapped and killed by four falling concrete slabs which weighed 14 tons and stood at 11-metres.

Five others were injured and taken to hospital.

On Friday morning, 29 March, the Department of Labour inspection team met with all the stakeholders involved in the incident.

These included the client, principal contractor, sub contractors as well as SAPS, Metro Police and eThekwini Fire.

During the meeting, it emerged that one worker had been discharged from hospital, while one was in ICU and two others in a general ward.

“The Department of Labour is investigating the incident in terms of the Occupational Health and Safety Act.

“If anyone is found to have contravened the tenets of the Act or its regulations, a recommendation to prosecute will be made to the National Prosecuting Authority,” added Thejane.
