CONCERNED Bluff residents gathered at the Stella Sports Club on Tuesday, March 6 after being made aware of a proposed cellular mast earmarked for Olympic Avenue.

Residents opposed to the cell mast believe it will be detrimental to their health in the long run.
A resident who chose not to be named said the site is barely five meters from each of the surrounding neighbours in Olympic Avenue and Franconia Road. “It’s in the middle of a residential area. We do not agree that a cell tower belongs in an area zoned for residential, as it does not add any value to our community and will certainly affect the value of our properties. A small notice was posted by eThekwini Municipality outside the property in mid-February. We were been given until Monday, 19 March to object,” she said.

She understands that the hosting property owner of such sites receive a measly R7,000 per month ‘‘for having a potentially harmful construction in our community’’. This could not be confirmed.
“The site is currently a vacant plot which as a community we have kept an eye on, ensuring no dumping takes place or vagrants. Reports on health issues related to the siting of cell towers close to residential areas were horrendous. Cancer, headaches, fatigue, depression, vertigo, lack of concentration and heart issues are just some of the issues reported internationally. Adverse effects are almost certain to occur within a 300m radius of the mast and, depending on the terrain, possibly up to 500m or more. Hundreds of Bluff residents are well within the ‘danger area’,” she added.
