Woman duped in dropped money scam in Montclair

People need to be more aware of their surroundings and the people they encounter

MONTCLAIR police urge shoppers to beware of ongoing scams at a local mall.

A woman was caught in a scam on Thursday, 8 March when she noticed another woman drop cash on the floor.

She picked up the money and was suddenly approached by another person who told her she needs to find the person who dropped the money, who she was told was allegedly outside the mall in the parking area.

“While outside looking for this woman, she was approached by two men who produced police appointment certificates which claimed they were police personnel,” said Montclair SAPS communication officer, Capt Dereck Vijiam.
The woman complied when they told her to get into their vehicle. They drove towards Jacobs where the men demanded her bank card and withdrew R400 from her account. Once they had her cash, they dropped her on the roadside. Later she realised another R200 had been withdrawn from her bank account. She opened a police case at Montclair SAPS.

“These types of scams happen quite often in the area and we want people to be more aware of their surroundings and the people they encounter,” advised Capt Vijiam.
