Circulating images have been denounced as fake news

Ethekwini Municipality has called on the public to stop circulating false pictures which have been posted on social media and sparked panic following this morning’s city-wide electricity outage.

Photos that emerged, purporting to be of this morning’s Klaarwater substation fire, which led to the outage.

Ethekwini officials confirmed the small fire has been extinguished

However, the images have been denounced as fake news, as they represent a 2011 incident in Japan, in which a tsunami and earthquake caused a fire at a power station.

The Klaarwater sub-station responsible for the outage suffered only a small fire, which has already been extinguished.

Residents are asked to reduce their usage of electricity in order to prevent overload tripping on the alternate circuits they are currently being fed from.
