BOWLING activities at Wentworth Bowling Club (WBC) this week include the Cedar Falls pairs competition which will be played on Wednesday morning at 9am.

On Friday morning the weekly Tomasina’s men’s casual bowls starts at 9am.

It is gratifying to hear that Tomcat Cavanagh is making good progress following a procedure required on his leg as a result of a fall. On Saturday afternoon the Doug Mitchell singles championship will continue. Play will start at 2pm.

Last week’s winners in the Tomasina’s men’s bowl were Kurt Spack Ivor, Aylward and Johan Nel. Graham Bransby, Herbie Roux and Ron Parsonage did enough to take second place. The sportsmen’s prize went to Brian Smith, Rajan Pillay and Ben Venter. Colin Nicholas was the happy recipient of the raffled pork and Ron Addinall welcomed the raffled chickens to his pantry. Graham Bransby and Tomcat Cavanagh chose the winning numbers on the 60/40 board and shared those spoils.

On Saturday morning, WBC hosted a section of men playing in the Port Natal singles championship. Spectators were treated to some gruellingly close matches and top class bowls as bowlers battled to guarantee they were one of the last two standing to make the section final. Members of the club rallied in support to ensure the visitors enjoyed a memorable day at the club.

Thanks are extended to all those who offered their services to clean the surrounds of the club, mark the games and act in an administrative capacity. Once again it was proved that a great team achieves top results. A special thank you is extended to Bronwyn Gelderblom from Firwood Bowling Club who stood in as umpire, as with all WBC’s own registered umpires being involved in the competition or injured, the club needed to outsource the responsibility.

On Sunday morning the Grand Rapid Spur Big Jim pairs competition was contested. Ben Newton and Zoë Dougall again proved they are a formidable pair and difficult to get the better of on the greens, as they played their way into first place. Johnny and Eileen du Plessis did enough in the first session to take the allocated prize. Second session prize went to Johan Nel and Moses Nuba. Honey Kitchenbrand and Margaret Walters shared the booty from the 60/40 board. The whiskey raffle was won by Simon Garland.

Past president John Somerville expresses his thanks to all the club bowlers for their support and well wishes. He hints that the fruit parcels were well received and greatly appreciated. Members are encouraged to contact John and arrange to pay him a visit – he enjoys the company.

Get well wishes are extended to two of the club’s more senior bowlers, Joe McNamara and Jumbo Nel. Both are in hospital, recuperating after surgery. WBC hopes to see them out and about, fit and well soon.

WBC knows there are many people who long to try their hand at the game of bowls. Many have played fun bowls at resorts while on holiday or have participated in business challenges. The club is offering all those potential future champions the opportunity to test their skill and experience bowls in a fun and relaxed atmosphere. Development bowls is held every Wednesday at 2.30pm. Those wishing to participate should get to the club at 2pm to register for play. Direct any enquiries to Margaret Walters on 082-961-8538. The club’s experienced bowlers are asked to find the time to assist in these games. Coaching the finer points and etiquette of the game is important and needs to be highlighted at the early stages of play.
