Late-night noise complaints plague Wentworth SAPS

No person may permit any noise or sound to emanate from a private residence or business premises.

WENTWORTH police have received numerous complaints about loud music in residential areas.

The station’s communications officer, Capt Mbuso Gumede warned residents that the playing of loud music and amplified noise is prohibited late at night and in the early part of the morning.

“According to Ethekwini Municipality bylaws, no person may permit any noise or sound to emanate from a private residence or business premises. Section 3 of the Ethekwini Municipality bylaws stipulates that no person may cause or permit any disturbance or impairment of the peace of any person from Sunday to Thursday between 9.30pm to 7am and from Friday to Saturday between 12am to 8am,” he stated.

Anyone found to have contravened these bylaws will be fined R1,000. “The police have a power to seize any item like sound system and any other devices and equipment if necessary, after a person has been warned numerous times. People must refrain from causing disturbance through loud music except in the case of a function where the neighbours are aware and police have been informed,” he added.

Residents are urged to notify the police station at least one month before such events or functions, in order for the local police to monitor and assist with patrols.
