Response officer douses Woodhaven kitchen fire

The officer found two frantic residents in the driveway as the fire blazed in the kitchen

A WOODHAVEN family was lucky to have escaped with only a burnt kitchen on Wednesday night, 24 January when a fire broke out at 9pm.

It appeared the stove caught alight. Blue Security community and media liaison officer Andreas Mathios said Blue Security’s armed response officer was the first to respond to the scene.

The officer found two frantic residents in the driveway as the fire blazed in the kitchen, spreading rapidly.
He acted quickly despite the poor visibility, switching off the main power and checking to see if any other electrical appliances were nearby. “He grabbed a hosepipe outside the house and got to work battling the fire, which he eventually managed to contain and put out,” Mathios said.

“Paramedics treated one of the residents for smoke inhalation before transporting her to hospital.”

Mathios said it appeared that something on the stove had caught alight. The Mobeni fire department attended and the chief commended the reaction officer on how he had assessed and acted in response.
