A quiet walk on the beach and a day spent looking for dolphins quickly turned bloody for Bouwer Nel, who said he heard his dog yelp and when he looked up, he saw a massive dog charging towards him.

“I formed a shield around my puppy and the dog managed to grab my arm, causing eight puncture wounds which resulted in 18 stitches,” he said.

“It was a frightening experience. One of my veins was damaged and I felt ‘whoozy’ from all the blood I lost. If it wasn’t for a kind man and his wife who came along with their medical kit, I don’t know what would have happened,” he added.

An ambulance was called and assisted Bouwer. “I asked the other dog’s owner if it is prone to biting, and I was shocked to find he is still paying damages for a similar incident. He said unfortunately he would not have the money to pay my medical bills,” said the frustrated man.

He urged people who walk their dogs on the beach to keep a tight grip on the leashes of their pets, to prevent any biting incidents from happening in the future. “If it does happen to you, take responsibility for your dog if it bites another person or their animal. Don’t brush it off like nothing happened,” he urged.
