Deserving Wentworth matric makes clean sweep with seven distinctions

She advises the 2018 matriculants to not procrastinate and be serious about their education

GROSVENOR Girls High School student Alyssa Murray (17) has proved that your surroundings should not deter you from achieving success if you’re focused.

The student who was born and raised in Wentworth, took the annual dux award at the Bluff girls’ school and achieved an incredible seven distinctions in all her subjects.

“I didn’t think I’d get all As, especially since I struggled with Afrikaans. I remember crying as soon as I walked out the hall when writing the English exam because of the level of difficulty – that was the hardest paper ever,” said Murray. “With the Afrikaans paper 2 exam, I was literally holding back my tears.”
She has been accepted to study chemical engineering at the University of Witwatersrand but is undecided as she is still awaiting a response closer to home, from the University of KwaZulu-Natal.

Her mother Dalene Murray could not hold back her tears when speaking, due to the excitement and joy that Alyssa’s achievements have brought to both her family and community.
“Alyssa is a deserving child who worked hard growing up in our community but didn’t fault in the daily actualities,” said Dalene. “We are so happy, we were actually so nervous for her because of how she reacted some days after writing (the exams). Dalene said parents need to invest in their children’s future and be supportive. “Be 80% involved in your child’s education and leave the rest to their educators – don’t just leave it on the teacher’s lap”.
Alyssa also aspires to become a published fiction author after she completes her chemical engineering studies.
She advises the 2018 matriculants to not procrastinate and be serious about their education – but also to get eight hours of sleep to prevent tardiness.
