Bluff police drive road safety campaign

The station shared these basic road safety tips which can save lives:

Brighton Beach police station turned its focus towards motoring safety, in response to an increase of road users into and out of its policing area, who are making their way to their various destinations for New Year’s celebrations.

Brighton Beach SAPS operational support and administrative members partnered to create awareness about road safety by hosting a brochure awareness campaign.

The desired outcome was to create awareness about road safety for motorists and their passengers, bikers, pedestrian and cyclists to reduce road fatalities, including a  reduction in drinking and driving.

The station shared these basic road safety tips which can save lives:

● Don’t drink and drive, or use banned substances when driving.

● Ensure that your vehicle is roadworthy at all times.

● Adhere to speed limits

● Don‘t overtake when it is unsafe to do so.

● Ensure you and your passengers are buckled up.

● Enter intersections with caution and consideration.

● Do not skip red robots.

● When driving at night, ensure that vehicle lights are fully functional.

● If the road surface is uneven or wet, drive with extra caution.

● Pedestrian must always walk against the flow of traffic, to ensure they can see oncoming traffic.

● Pedestrians must cross roads at a pedestrian crossing, and if one is not available, only cross the road when it is safe to do so. Do not cross the road at a blind spot or bend. Children must not cross a road if not under adult supervision. Pedestrians, especially children, should not challenge oncoming traffic and run across the road or through an intersection. Wear light-coloured clothing at night that makes you visible.

● Pedestrians should not use the road when they are intoxicated.

● Whether you are a motorist or a pedestrian, do not talk or text on your mobile device  or listen to music with headphones. Stay focused on the road and your surroundings at all times.

Project manager, Captain Louise Le Roux thanked her colleagues for their active participation in distributing the awareness brochures at Hillside Mall, Bluff Towers and Bluff SuperSpar to motorists and pedestrians. The station thanks the malls for providing a platform to host this campaign.
