Stabbing victim helps put robber away for 12 years

The victim managed to escape his attackers and was assisted by a member of the public

WENTWORTH detective, Warrant Officer Walter Marais secured the 12 year jail sentence of a taxi conductor who robbed and stabbed a man in Quality Street in June.
The robbery took place on Wednesday, 21 June at about 10pm when the victim was on his way home from work in Quality Street.

He was approached by three men, one of whom he immediately recognised. The other two were wearing balaclavas. They held up the man at knifepoint and stabbed him in the neck, before taking his wallet containing an undisclosed amount of money. “The stabbing victim managed to escape his attackers and was assisted by a member of the public who took him to the hospital,” said Wentworth SAPS communication officer, Capt Mbuso Gumede.

The conductor was the only person positively identified by the victim.
Following the positive identification, Detective Marais arrested him. When he was charged in court, he pleaded guilty. On 23 October, he was sentenced to 12 years’ imprisonment.
“SAPS Wentworth management commends Detective Marais for securing the conviction to ensure the criminal is put behind bars. The complainant was also pleased and welcomed the sentence,” added Capt Gumede.
