Bluff storm tree debris will take four weeks to clear

The department will not remove any branches or tree debris which is placed on verges from within residents' own private properties.

Ward 66 councillor JP Prinsloo confirmed the eThekwini Department of Parks and Recreation will take at least four weeks to remove all debris and fallen trees from Bluff and surrounding areas.

This comes after a freak storm tore into Durban South’s suburbs with 70km/h winds which caused severe damage to homes, roads and cars across the city’s southern and central areas on Tuesday, 10 October.

The parks department has requested that branches be removed and disposed of by residents themselves.

The parks department has appointed multiple contractors to remove all the tree branches in a process that will likely take up to four weeks to finalise. The Bluff was one of the areas most affected by the storm.

The department will not remove any branches or tree debris which is placed on verges from within residents’ own private properties.

“The department is aware of the following trees and has scheduled their removal (see attached list at the end of this article). If your road does not appear on this list, email bluffservicedelivery@gmail.com or ward66@ethekwini.org with the street name, closest street pole number and download our new service delivery app, Active Citizen, to report any service delivery related issues,” said Cllr Prinsloo.

About eight deaths have been confirmed to date, as a result of the storm, including an eThekwini Municipality worker who was seeking refuge from the torrential downpour when a wall collapsed, killing her instantly. One insurance company reported that it received damage claims estimated at about R15-million.
