#CrimeStats: All your stats for Montclair, Bluff and Wentworth

The crime statistics that were released for the 2016/ 2017 period have revealed a number of decreases and increases in Durban South communities.

The crime statistics have been released for the year, but what does it really mean for the areas you live in?

Statistics in Montclair and surroundings show there are a number of increases in the following types of crime:

This year saw a decrease in community reported serious crimes, including commercial crime and shoplifting which reduced from 2,243 incidents to 1,947, representing a 14.5% decrease. There is also a decrease in property-related crimes which relates to burglary at residential and non-residential premises and theft of and out of vehicle. According to the statistics, these dropped from 961 cases to 822.

Wentworth has seen a number of decreases in its criminals activities, including contact crimes against a person (murder, common assault and robbery) which dropped from 597 to 537 reported cases. Community reported serious crimes, including commercial crime and shoplifting has dropped drastically from 1,517 to 1,315 within a year. But, drug related and possession of illegal firearm and ammunition crime is still on the rise with drugs now sitting at a 21.1 per cent increase and illegal firearms at 183.3 per cent increase.


Brighton Beach sees a slight decrease of 0.9 per cent in contact crimes including common assault which dropped from 177 to 173, property related crimes with 6.9 per cent which includes, burglary at residential and non-residential premises and theft of and out of vehicle. An increase is shown in crime detected crimes with a noticeable increase in driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol with a 4.1 per cent incline while other crimes including drug-related crime remained stagnate.
