Conmen posing as Ethekwini Municipality reps extort money from #DurbanStorm victims

Residents are urged to be weary of this criminal behaviour and be cautious when allowing people into their homes.

Residents affected by the Durban storm on Tuesday, 10 October are warned not to give money to anyone who claims they are from eThekwini municipality.

“There are individuals out there posing as eThekwini officials who have been sent by the Mayor to register people affected by the recent storms. It is alleged these culprits charge vulnerable people a fee for the alleged registration,” warns  mayoral spokesman, Mthunzi Gumede.
The municipality condemned this behaviour and assured the public that no payment is required for them to receive any assistance from government.

Residents are urged to be wary of this criminal behaviour and be cautious when allowing people into their homes. Those whose homes have been damaged by the storm are encouraged to report matters to their local councillor or call the disaster management centre on 031-367-0039 during office hours. The city’s number to report emergencies to is 031-361-0000.
