8 ways to beat tonight’s fuel price increase

Motorist will pay 25 cents more for unleaded 93 octane fuel at the coast

Don’t forget to fill up before the October fuel price increase bites at midnight tonight (Tuesday, 3 October), while will see motorist pay 25 cents more for unleaded 93 octane fuel at the coast.

All grades of petrol will be increasing, with 95 octane petrol rising 29 cents and diesel rising by 42 cents per litre. The wholesale price of illuminating paraffin goes up 39 cents.

Consumers are likely to come under increasing financial pressure as, according to the Automobile Association (AA), more fuel price hikes are likely as year-end approaches.

While you’re cursing this extra burden on your budget, consider these fuel saving tips that are easy to implement and which will ensure your car sips petrol.

Delay optional trips until after rush hour
The stop-start nature of rush hour means your engine continually has to work harder, meaning more of an impact on your fuel bill. Accelerate smoothly and avoid having to break consistently by keeping a safe following distance and adjusting your speed to that of the prevailing traffic around you.

Make fewer trips
When your car is cold, it uses more fuel for the first few kilometres, so consider planning your travels a little better to combine all your errands into one longer trip. Also think twice before going for a joy ride – it all adds up.

Reduce drag
Close your windows and sunroof to reduce the drag on your vehicle and make it more aerodynamic. Equally important is to remove bicycle racks and roof racks when not in use.

Drop any unnecessary weight
Clear your boot and car interior of any unnecessary weight to lighten the load on your fuel tank.

Turn off your aircon
When the weather allows, consider deselecting the snowflake button which increases fuel consumption.

Maintain your vehicle to ensure its efficiency
Regular services keep your engine working smoothly and ensure that your vehicle operates efficiently.

Stick to the speed limit
Harsh acceleration and high speeds increase fuel consumption considerably, so be sure to go easy on the brake and your accelerator.

Ensure your tyres are set at the correct pressure
Correctly inflated tyres not only translate to better fuel efficiency, but are also safer as it means your tyres’ performance is optimised. The lower the pressure, the more fuel the car needs to keep moving. It is advisable to check your car’s tyre pressure every two weeks, and to reset it according to the load you’re carrying. You’ll find the ideal tyre pressure settings on the inside of one of the front doors.
