Stiff sentences for drunk drivers

Driving under the influence is a serious crime and it could costs someone's life

THREE drunk drivers were convicted of their crimes in Wentworth Court.
A man who appeared before court on Monday, 11 September was found guilty and fined R15,000 and six months imprisonment, alternatively R20,000 or 12 months’ imprisonment, all of which was suspended for three years.

Following him, a 60-year-old man was found guilty on Tuesday, 19 September and fined R3000 or four months’ imprisonment for the same offence. His license was suspended and he was disqualified from obtaining a driver’s licence.
The third accused was found guilty of drunk driving on Monday, 18 September and fined R6000 or three months’ imprisonment.

Wentworth SAPS communiction officer, Capt Mbuso Gumede said: “Driving under the influence is a serious crime and it could costs someone’s life. Drivers should stop consuming alcohol before they jump into vehicles. Most fatalities are caused by drunk drivers.”
