Golf club keen to secure its future with youngsters

Juniors are invited to learn about golf.

THE call has gone out to the next generation of golfers from the Bluff National Park Golf Club (BNPGC).

After overcoming the financial struggles of the last few years, the club has set its sights on ensuring its legacy with junior golfers.

BNPGC director of golf, Mark Warrener, who has been involved with the club for nearly a decade and a half, has taken up the mantle of attracting juniors to the club.

“We have been through some difficult times and we have gone through the worst of it with the help of the community we are established within. We have come to the conclusion that to ensure we never encounter the troubles we have come across, we need to secure our future.

In order to do this, we need to invest in the future and the only way, through my experience, is to incorporate juniors into our vision. In essence, the stronger your junior membership, the stronger your future remains,” said Mark.

With this plan in mind, Mark has embarked on a free junior membership programme for children younger than 17. It will start with monthly clinics to give the youngsters a taste for the sport.

“We need to give back the community that has done so much for the golf course. Golf has more life lessons in it than people realise – it teaches you how to carry yourself. We will teach the children about golf etiquette, sportsmanship and public confidence along with the particulars of the sport.”

“The stigma is that the club is only for members but we want to change that. We want it to be a family-orientated place. It is a place for families,” said club captain, Mornay Pretorius.

“The average age of club members is about 50 – we need to bring in juniors to be the next generation. Not only that, we want to get children out in the sunshine, exercising and learning life skills,” said Mark.
“Yes, children need to know there is more to life than TV games and computers,” agreed Mornay.

The duo said through the support of community members and the work of the members, the club is doing “exceptionally well”. They have even purchased new equipment for grounds maintenance.

“The course is in phenomenal condition. In fact I would say it is in a better condition than I can ever remember it being in,” said Mark.
