7 unusual terms for family members

How many niblings do you have?

DO you know who your patruel is?

This week’s #SLSWednesdayWord is about weird family names, like patruel – your father’s brother’s child. Often times it is also used to describe the nephew of your brother.

Let’s take a look at some other obsolete or unusual terms for family members:

Brother/sister consanguinean:
A brother or sister with the same father as you, but a different mother.

Brother/Sister-german:
A brother or sister who comes from both the same mother and father as you.

Double cousin:
A cousin who shares the same four grandparents as you. This would happen, for example, if your mother’s sister and your father’s brother and they had a child.

Machetonim:
Your child’s in-laws. Essentially the parents of your child’s spouse.

Niblings:
The collective term for your nieces and nephews.

Womb brother or sister:
A brother or sister with the same mother as you, but a different father.
