Wheelchairs take to Jomba! dance stage

This work is very special to me and is one of the best works I have ever done. - Jarryd Watson

WENTWORTH’S talented dance crew under Jarryd Watson’s Dance Movement who were chosen to take part in this year’s annual Jomba from 23 August to 3 September will include a troupe of wheelchair performers who will set the stage alight.

The highly acclaimed JOMBA! Contemporary Dance Experience hosted by the University of KwaZulu-Natal’s Centre for Creative Arts will showcase a number of South African and international choreographers, dancers and dance-makers at this year’s 19th edition.

The wheelchair performance will be choreographed by Wentworth’s Jarryd Watson and his performers. Entitled ‘Fix who we are’, the wheelchair performance portrays an emotional dance piece fused with hip hop genre, which speaks about salvation and how everybody goes through pain, suffering, and obstacles that get us down and how we as different individuals deal with this and overcome our challenges in our own ways.

“Using the wheelchair dancers with the able-bodied dancers allowed me to explore this work and create the vision of the story being told in the performance. I think audiences will identify with it through whatever personal experiences they are going through in their lives. This work is very special to me and is one of the best works I have ever done. Last year it won the best performance in the emerging professional category at the Durban Dance Youth Awards, and this year getting into Jomba Fringe it just so special, overwhelming and an honour considering we were one of eight performances picked from more than 90 applications to perform at the Fringe,” said Jarryd.

I’m just so happy and humbled this work is being exposed, recognised and appreciated, giving the wheelchair dancers an opportunity to explore the dancing world.
