Free karate to inspire

Webster offers free classes to the community twice a week at the Austerville community hall in Wentworth.

TO encourage, inspire and motivate the youth of Wentworth and surrounding areas, Academy of martial arts Subarashii Dojo Sensei, Carl Webster who is the current Protea karate team captain in karate is offering his services for free.

In the hopes of producing a generation of well-rounded girls and boys, Webster has dedicated himself to training the youth who can’t afford karate lessons. He has already begun an outreach programme at two Bluff children’s homes, which saw him personally fund the purchase of karategi (outfits) for the children. “It’s about seeing the faces of my students from these homes. They light up when they see they are capable of being great. To show them that somebody cares about them and their well-being is invaluable to them.

Webster offers free classes to the community twice a week at the Austerville community hall in Wentworth. Those aged four years and upwards are welcome to join. He also does taebo for adults who want to stay fit.

“My goal is to keep the children off the streets, especially in these times when kidnapping, shooting and drugs are rife in the community. Children need to know that the lifestyle of a karate student is a lifelong lesson. This will always boil down to discipline, the number one lesson in karate and I want to teach them that. I push myself to stay dedicated to my art and to be the role model that many children miss in their lives. Karate can be their ticket out of their situation and to beat the stereotype they may have been burdened with. Our youth have so much to offer, if we give them that push and that motivation, the world would be a more peaceful, organised place,” said the sensei.

Sensei Webster is funding the uniforms out of his own pockets and is doing his best to aid the children without any help but he would appreciate any support and assistance from the community. “After all, we are doing it for the children,” he added.
