Stamps to create a buzz about bees

The aim of the stamps is to educate the public about the need for the conservation of bees.

BEES will be making a buzz around the world from 12 July with the issuing of the South African Post Office ‘Bees for Africa’ stamps.

Designed by The Open Window Institute for Arts and Digital Sciences’ student, Jessica Delaney, the aim of the stamps is to educate the public about the need for the conservation of bees.

The use of pollution and pesticides are a major reason for declining numbers of honey bees, warns Dr Hanelie Human of the department of zoology and entomology at the University of Pretoria.

“Bees are much more than just producers of honey. They provide an essential pollination service to farmers. Without honeybees, thousands of plant species may die out and fruit and vegetable farming will become virtually impossible. Honey bees pollinate about 50 types of crop across South Africa,” said Dr Human.

You can buy stamps at all major post offices or order them from sastamps@postoffice.co.za from 12 July.
