Whistle blown on Woodlands illegal dumping

The case was investigated and the man was issued with a R5,000 fine.

THE pro-active efforts and action of a Woodlands resident ensured an illegal dumper’s activities were halted.

While the local fight against illegal dumping is long and ongoing, every little victory counts as it sends out a message to others that the issue will not be taken lightly.
A resident from Woodlands raised the alarm about illegal dumping taking place on Thursday, 15 June when he noticed a man dumping building rubble at the Nagle Square park in Woodlands.
“When he noticed a vehicle stopped in the park, close to where the dumping had been taking place, he investigated. He found a resident from the area dumping building rubble. He took photographs as evidence and recorded the registration number of the vehicle. He explained to the driver of the vehicle that his actions were illegal. When the vehicle left the park he followed so that he could obtain the address of the offender,” said ward 66 councillor, Gavin Hegter.
The vigilant resident handed over the evidence and details to Cllr Hegter, who forwarded it to the parks department law enforcement officer. “Due to the fact that the resident was prepared to give a statement, by 10am the case was investigated and the man was issued with a R5,000 fine,” added Cllr Hegter. “It is only through the efforts of our concerned residents, like in this case, that we will maintain the standards of our area. Although this man went beyond what was expected, we can all do our bit to stop this illegal behaviour which is costing the ratepayers over R120-m a year,” he added.
