Annual festival returns with talented dancers

The festival includes many dance studios, street dance crews, youth groups, community groups, amateurs and professionals dancers from around KZN.

THE fifth annual Durban Dance Movement Festival is set to hit the Playhouse stage this Saturday at 2pm, 4pm and 7.30pm on Saturday, 1 July.

Preparations are well underway and the showcase productions are sure to bring the very best in a variety of dance from hip hop, ballet, contemporary, break dancing, and local styles to entertain audiences.

The festival comprises many dance studios, street dance crews, youth groups, community groups, amateurs and professionals dancers from all over KZN making it over 300 dancers performing at the festival this year in a junior showcase at 2pm, senior showcase at 4pm and professional showcase at 7.30pm.

Participating in this youth dance festival is the Bluff group TransceDance and MCD Dance Studio under the watchful eye of creative modern choreographer Candice Daniels. They will be performing two creative and abstract contemporary dances entitled ‘Chandelier’ and ‘Stages of me’.
The style of this group with their strong modern and ballet technique training adds to the dynamics of the festival which contributes to the celebration of Durban’s diversity that the energetic youth will be showcasing on Saturday in three explosive shows.
Bluff dance group Transdance members, Caroline Tyrell, Sam Wheat, KerryLeigh Abbit and Erin Roux take part in the dance production.

Other dance groups from the Bluff appearing in the festival are Betty Blake Dance Studio and Outcast Crew, which formed from a group of scholars at Grosvenor Boys High. Infamous Wentworth group and hosts of the festival, Dance Movement will also appear among other dance troupes.

“Dance is a celebration of talents and skills that showcase the best of our youth. This festival has provided that platform for five years and I’m so excited for this year – Durban audiences are going to be in for exciting entertainment” said director Jarryd Watson.
