Man apprehended for multiple Glebelands Hostel shootings

The operation by police led to the arrest of a 30-year-old man.

A MULTI-force operation last week led to the arrest of a man who is believed to be involved in multiple shootings at Glebelands Hostel.

Along with the provincial task team and Umlazi visible policing, the eThekwini outer south cluster task team mounted the operation in a bid to clamp down on illegal firearms and search for wanted people and stolen items.

The result of the operation was the arrest of a 30-year-old man found in possession of a 9mm pistol with 44 live rounds of ammunition. A Toyota Etios, which had been stolen in Umbilo in April, was also seized.

“The suspect was linked to the shooting that occurred at the hostel on 4 June where two men aged 25 and 27 were shot while visiting a friend. Further investigation revealed the suspect is also linked to another shooting on the afternoon of 9 June in which a 28-year-old male was shot and injured while walking at the hostel,” said media SAPS’ Colonel Thembeka Mbhele.

Along with the charges for the shootings, the man will also face possession of stolen property, illegal possession of firearm and ammunition and theft of a motor vehicle charges. The gun has been sent for ballistic testing to determine if it was used in the hostel shootings or any other crimes.

“The suspect will be thoroughly profiled to determine if he is linked to other hostel-related crimes currently under investigation. Police will remain visible at the hostel to prevent serious and violent crimes as well as arresting wanted suspects,” said the KZN acting provincial commissioner, Major General Bheki Langa.
