Yellow Wood Park Women’s Institute tackles sensitive hygiene topic

After tea the president and judge Linda Melson then gave a detailed report on our entries on the Royal Show.

YELLOWWOOD Park Women’s Institute (YWP WI) president Sharon Quail opened the meeting with the WI prayer and a big welcome to all members and the many visitors.

After the usual formalities of the evening, the speaker Vanessa Wilesmith gave an interesting and most enlightening talk on the problems young women pupils have at school during their menstrual cycle.

When families face poverty, it seems the last item on the list will be sanitary pads for the girls and they have to use all sorts of methods to protect themselves, often causing infection.

It is vital that this problem be faced at all schools and in a small way, YWP WI tried to assist by donating sanitary pads and cash to schools in the area.

The WI was fortunate to have teachers from local schools Ms Michel, Ms Turner, Ms Thyssen, Ms Goodwin, Ms James and Ms Reid at the meeting and they confirmed the problems faced by young girls and how often many days of schooling and vital education are missed because of this personal female problem. This is a problem not only in developing countries but all over the world. Many thanks to the teachers who attended the meeting.

After tea the president and judge Linda Melson then gave a detailed report on entries on the Royal Show.

This is the first time YWP WI has entered and the institute congratulates members who had entries. Next year the aim is to double the entries. All the birthday girls were greeted for their special day and one member was lucky in the raffle draw. Thank you as always to the members who do Botanic Gardens duty.

YWP WI is looking for a volunteer for the Meals on Wheels. Come on members, you get driven around Durban. Members were asked to keep Congress in mind as the WI will need entries to those competitions as well, so an appeal to the crafty members.

Vice president Robyn Murray read out the competition results and the meeting closed with a prayer and a message to keep safe and go well.
