Night clubs shut down in Wentworth raid

The operations will continue in other parts of the city without warning.

A NIGHT raid in Wentworth resulted in the closure of three clubs.

The South Durban Basin (SDB) Area Based Management (ABM) office along with eThekwini Municipality, Metro Police and the South African Police Service recently targeted businesses operating outside of the law.

Night clubs and bars along Bluff Road, Chamberlain Road, Austerville Drive and Silvertree Road were searched. Three clubs were shut down and one owner was prosecuted when they were found selling alcohol without the proper licences.

Steve Middleton, Metro Police deputy head of operations, hailed the operation a success. “Our team was not only looking for alcohol permits, but also checked to see if the business was registered and if there were any other illegal activities taking place in these establishments,” said Middleton.

Going forward they will also target clubs which had complaints against them under the Behaviour in Public Places By-law.

“This by-law clearly states no person may permit noise or sound from a private residence or business premises in his or her control to be audible to users outside of such premises to such an extent that it reasonably interferes with the use and enjoyment by an owner or occupier of his or her property.”

Under the regulations of the bylaw, no-one may cause a disturbance from Sunday to Thursday, from 9.30pm to 7am and from Friday to Saturday from midnight to 8am.

SDB ABM’s Skho Msweli said the operation aimed to discourage activities that contribute to crime and grime and to address illegal businesses operating in the area.

The operations will continue in other parts of the city without warning.

“It is operations like these which will ensure businesses comply with the laws that govern discos and nightclubs. We are happy to get the support from all the law enforcement agencies as well as concerned members of the community,” said SDB ABM municipal services manager, Sifiso Xulu.
