Just what is kickball?

Learn a new sport today.

TODAY, 20 April Americans celebrate National Kickball Day, but just what is this weird sport?

This combination of soccer and baseball has been played since the early 20th century.

Like baseball the game is played on a diamond, with a home plate and three bases which players need to run around to score a point.

Instead of using a baseball and bat, a ball similar to a soccer ball is used. The ‘pitcher’ rolls a ball to the player on home base who kicks it and tries to make a run for first base. The fielding team then tries to ‘tag’ them out with the ball.

It was initially used as a softer way to introduce children to baseball and gained popularity, becoming a sport in its own right.

What do you think about kickball? Are you keen to give it a try?
