Sweet tooths of the world unite!

Celebrate World Caramel Day today.

FOR all you sweet-tooths, today (Wednesday, 5 April) is World Caramel Day.

I don’t know about you, but I am excited! Caramel is one of my favourite foods – even more than chocolate! And that is something most women would find scandalous.

The process of caramelisation happens when water is removed from sugar.

Caramelising sugar has been a tradition for making low-cost sweets since at least the 1600s. In the late 1800s, its popularity grew rampantly when people started adding milk and other delicious items to the mixture.

Caramel works well on waffles or pancakes. It can be used in cake recipes or even on meat on the braai.

Recently, salted caramel has become the rage. Personally, I am not a fan at all. I don’t see the point of the fad – what about you? How do you like caramel – salted or plain? Do you add anything else?
