AN educational talk on first aid for horses was presented at the Yellowwood Park Gymkhana Club on Saturday, 1 April.
Hosted by Doctor Caryl Knox, the equine first aid course went off without a hitch as those who attended were hooked on every word. The interesting presentation touched on issues such as wounds, how to apply bandages on horses, colic and lameness.

The talk focused on preparing people and equipping them with skills of first aid in case they come across a horse in trouble. The gymkhana club welcomed the doctor as she demonstrated on the club members’ horses, inviting her audience to practice on the peaceful creatures.
“It is important to know how to care for and treat the animals. It can save their life,” said Dr Knox.
The main topic of the day was colic, a common ailment in horses which can be life threatening. “Causes of colic range from a low-range impaction to twisted and damaged gut that can lead to toxemia and death in a matter of hours,” she added.
A good way to spot colic is if the horse is violently rolling as he tries to relieve his discomfort.
