Bluff copper pipe thief netted after 2km foot chase

Police saw two men behaving suspiciously on the Bluff.

A TWO-kilometre foot chase led to the arrest of a man for the theft of copper pipes on the Bluff on Tuesday, 28 March.

Inspector Shaun Jooste and Constable Jevon China of the Metro Dog Unit noticed two men behaving suspiciously as they ambled along towards Soloman Mahlangu Drive (Edwin Swales VC) from the harbour.

“The pair were carrying big white sacks which appeared heavy in weight. In anticipation of their destination the police officers took up position in a parking lot of a business premises situated along Solomon Mahlangu Drive,” said Brighton Beach media officer, Captain Louise Le Roux.

When the officers acknowledged themselves to the two men, they dropped the goods and fled. The officers followed the men along the canal adjacent to the road for about 2km before they were able to capture one of them.

The second was tracked down at Clairwood Tanker Services but the officers unfortunately lost sight of him and he escaped.
