The 59-year-old was blasted on Facebook for a post in which he vented his frustrations about the Hindu holiday of Diwali and those who celebrated with noisy fireworks. His racist post quickly went viral and the call for action was immediately taken up by political parties and the general public.

He was found guilty of crimen injuria for his comments.

Many have expressed their disappointment in the lenient sentence passed down by the court. ANC spokesman Mhlabunzima Memela, said: he is disappointed at the failure of the justice system to impose a harsher sentence on the man who continues “to divide our people with his toxic racism utterances.” “We believe that the sentencing is not only a slap on the wrist but an insult to the Hindu community and other victims of racists attacks.”
