Municipality’s air quality unit is assessing air quality through its monitoring station in Wentworth

Provincial and city departments are closely monitoring the Bayhead warehouse building blaze for any ‘potentially hazardous materials’.

BREAKING NEWS: Fire rages at South Coast Road factory

According to a statement released by the KZN Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs, they are in constant communication with the municipality’s air quality monitoring unit which is watching the situation through its air quality monitoring station in Wentworth to detect any potentially hazardous materials in the smoke.

By law, municipalities are required to have air monitoring stations, particularly in those areas with a high concentration of industrial activity. The owners of the warehouse where the fire broke out are also expected, within the next 14 days, to provide a comprehensive report on what caused the fire, what measures were taken to mitigate the situation and what measures will be taken to prevent a recurrence of a similar incident in the future.

10 years on, SDCEA makes renewed call for city to provide emergency plan as #Durbanfire rages

This process will be led by the national Department of Environmental Affairs as the competent authority that handles such matters. The provincial department will play a supporting role in the process.
